The most important item to bring on your trip is your passport. Without it, you won’t get very far. Once you will completed your pre-travel checklist, and before you step out the door, one last check for that important little book won’t hurt. Before you travel, make sure your passport is still valid. It’s always a good idea to have at least six months left on your passport before it expires, so check your expiry date ahead of time so you can order a new one before your trip.

ADAPTERS

Don’t forget to pack your EU adapters.  On Amazon, you can buy. Two adapters should suffice for your trip, allowing you to charge your laptop, phone, camera, hair appliances, and other devices.

CHARGER FOR PHONE/PORTABLE CHARGER

We all experienced the frustration of having our phone die while driving. So bring a portable phone charger so you can charge your phone while on the go. You don’t want your phone to die while you’re lost in the city, or to miss out on great photo opportunities.

Clothes

The difficult part: clothing. Remember to pack a combination of light and warm layers.. It’s always a good idea to check the weather forecast before leaving and pack accordingly. Packing light is an art form, and with limited space in your backpack, you should be strict with yourself and bring only what you need. Consider what activities you’ll be doing during your trip so you’re prepared with the right gear – whether you’ll be hiking, snorkelling, partying, skiing, or sightseeing around the city, you will need appropriate attire. If you are going on a long trip, make sure the hostel has a laundry room where you can wash your clothes and wear them again.

Shoes for Walking

If you plan on doing a lot of walking or hiking, bring some good quality walking shoes. To save space in your luggage, it’s usually best to wear your bulkiest shoes to the airport. Mountain Warehouse is a great place to find low-cost walking shoes that will last for years.

Bag liner for sleeping

A sleeping bag is always useful to have, especially if you are a germaphobe. They’re light, easy to pack, and make an excellent bed lining if you are sleeping in a tent or hostel.

Water Bottle

Most travel backpacks have a water bottle compartment that is easily accessible while walking. Reusable water bottles are not only better for the environment, but they are also a great way to save money because you won’t have to keep buying more.

Medicine and painkiller

It’s always a good idea to have some medication with you on the road. Pain relievers or allergy tablets are useful for headaches, muscle aches, period pains, and stomach aches, so keep some on hand just in case. Always keep Imodium or Dioralyte on hand.

Camera

If you forget about this bad boy, you will be sorry for the rest of your life. If you want to buy a new travel camera, nowadays your smartphone camera is good enough to capture great shots, so if you want to carry less, skip the camera.

Outfits for Going Out

Pack some going-out outfits if you intend to party and hit the clubs. It can be difficult to decide what to wear on nights out, but be brutal and only pack what you need. Two party outfits should suffice, along with a couple of extra tops for mixing and matching.

FIRST-AID SET

Every backpacker should have a first aid kit on hand because you never know when you’ll need it.

Suncream

SPF sun cream is one of the most important items to have in your travel backpack. Apply it liberally and carry sun cream with you wherever you go. Especially if you are prone to burning. Even if it doesn’t appear to be sunny, the sun’s rays are still present, so wear sunscreen every day while travelling. Factor 50 will never let you down.

GLASSES/ CONTACT LENSES/ CLEANER FOR CONTACT LENSES

All of the above are critical for those who must wear glasses. When you’re travelling, you want to be able to SEE. Or else, what’s the point? If you wear glasses, make this a priority item on your packing list to ensure you don’t forget.

Material for Reading

You may spend a lot of time on planes and trains during your journey, so buy some good books to keep yourself entertained (or an eReader to save space). While travelling, city guides and phrasebooks are also useful, but they can be heavy, so try to limit yourself to one. If you have a data-enabled SIM card, you’re set.
